This 3-hour private walking tour is a combination of our two most popular itineraries – Chinatown & North Beach and Downtown & Embarcadero and is our best selling tour in San Francisco.

You’ll explore the heart of the city and gain an understanding of how each neighborhood has evolved from their sleepy roots in the early 1800s to the hustle and bustle of today. See how the shoreline was literally moved and why that might not have been such a great idea.

Wander down an art-filled alley that connects Chinatown with Little Italy before posing for the perfect mantlepiece-worthy shot.

Meet a local shopkeeper and sample some delicious treats while learning about the effect drought has played for the farming community.

This tour has it all – art, history, food, and a plethora of juicy stories to keep you on the edge of your seat. Your private guide will escort you through narrow alleys, to secret gardens, and through beautiful buildings, on a quest to show you the best downtown San Francisco has to offer.

This is the tour that reaches the parts that other tours do not reach. A fascinating journey through San Francisco’s past and present. Michael is a charming, knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide who takes you on an enthralling trip through San Francisco’s history. I highly recommend this tour, you will not be disappointed.

My daughter invited me to accompany her to San Francisco for a law conference. It was my first visit and my daughter's second). We had 3 full days to explore the city and wanted to find a tour guide who could give us a concise, informative, unique but above all, fun, experience in a few short hours. Well, we found that and more, in Michael, from Boutique Traveler! He was so easygoing and knowledgeable and gave us an in depth, personal but historically accurate view of some of the iconic San Francisco neighborhoods. We learned about the history, architecture, and culture as we walked the streets of each neighborhood. In addition, as part of our package, he took all of our pictures, with his camera, and posted them online, in his photo gallery! I was so impressed with his ability to make us "feel" the pulse and vibe of each section, that I booked him, for another two hours, in the afternoon, to explore a different area of the city. If I ever visit another city where Michael provides guided tours, I would definitely book with him! His tours set a positive tone for the rest of our time in San Francisco. Thanks Mike!!

Whether you do any other tours in SF or not this one should definitely be added to your list. Michael is extremely informative and shows you the real San Francisco providing you with rich insight into the history and personalities that have made the city what it is today. The tour manages to combine history, architecture, fresh local produce tastings and a bunch of sites you won't find on any main stream tour. This was my second time to SF and I saw non of the things I saw the first time. Thanks for a great tour!

Michael is extremely knowledgable of the history, architecture, culture and quirks of the city. He was an excellent tour guide and showed us all the great things to appreciate about the city -- like the twelve rooftop gardens in San Fran that are open to the public but few people know about them, about the many buried ships beneath places like Starbucks, why North Beach is called North Beach, even though it's not on the beach, and how awesome the permanent farmers market is inside the old ferry building. Highly recommend his tour for anyone on their first day in the city! Or for anyone who's been living there and wants to learn more about the city history.

We had a very enjoyable afternoon with Michael taking us to places we would never have known on our own. He had interesting details and stories of buildings and monuments and always answered our questions with patience. I appreciate all the pictures he took of us and promptly sent them to us by email. He was very pleasant and warm and the three hour walk just went by like a breeze. I would definitely recommend this tour to anybody who wants to know more about SF downtown and can spare an afternoon.

I’ve gotta say, this was one of the most pleasurable and unique experiences I’ve had the opportunity to come across. Unlike commercial tours I’ve been on when visiting different places, this tour was intimate and highly interactive. Walking through major streets and small alley-ways of a few of San Francisco’s famous neighborhoods, tasting locally-made food and talking to locals, grabbing a beer and sharing in on an experience with other fellow travelers…. definitely beats being in a tour bus with someone pointing at something and throwing a bunch of information at you. The amazing mix of both tourist spots and hidden gems on this tour were definiteley eye-opening. Michael, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and had quite a bit of history/facts to share about each stop. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience what makes San Francisco such an attractive place

I am not usually much of a "tour" person, however Michael's approach is perfect for those who are looking for something a little off the beaten path. No jumping on and off a bus. No tight time table to keep to. Just a casual walk through some of the most interesting areas of SF. You will still see some of the main SF attractions and Michael has a wealth of interesting and historical information to offer. However, Michael takes you to places that you would not find on your own. You go into buildings that you would normally just walk past on the street and you are rewarded with some of the most beautiful architecture and detail anywhere. You are also taken to some of the best locations for photographs. Michael's tours will appeal to the foodies, the photogs and the history buffs in your group. Even though he is not originally from SF, Michael has the insider knowledge of the city and he can really give you a taste of what is it like to be a local. He does all of this in a very laid back and humourous way. His tour is a perfect way to get an introduction to SF and I would highly recommend it for small groups.

We had a 3 day stay at San Francisco and we didn't had the chance to explore on our own the secret places of the city. Michael really made this tour special telling us the story of the buildings and the city and bringing us to places we didn't even suspect existed in San Francisco. We went back on our own to a couple of them but we couldn't have got the perspective we had without Michael. He is very knowledgeable about the city so we got all our questions answered and more. I called him ahead of time to get suggestions about where to go before our tour with him so we didn't go twice to the same places and we had the chance to explore other things. He was very kind directing me to some touristic places we were not cover on the tour. This really allow us to optimize our time in San Fran as we just spent 3 days there. Also he took great pictures of us we couldn't have taken on our own. I really recommend you to take this tour in the first days of your stay and this will give you ideas of what to do next... Also ask him about his other tours...

This is an absolutely must do start to a first trip to San Francisco - particularly if time is limited. We were in SF for five days for the first time and thought it would be a good way to get our bearings; it turned out to be more than that and was a totally different element to the visit; a destination in its own right. Michael is extremely knowledgeable about SF and has clearly spent much time and effort in collecting together some of the less obvious information about the city which he delivers on the hoof and with great enthusiasm and engagement with his guests. I will not spoil the experience by giving his secrets away. Michael is also quite happy to share his information about other parts of SF other than those you will visit with him. Highly recommended.

I absolutely loved this tour with Michael! I have lived in SF for a couple of years, but learned so many new things about my beloved city. I had been to places like the Ferry Building and through the Financial District, but never like this. Michael combines the old rich history of the city, funny antidotes and a casual comfortable atmosphere which really made it memorable. I have enjoyed pulling out fun facts from our tour to my friends and have taken visitors to some if the fun spots like the Forture Cookie Factory and Palace Hotel. All in all definitely worth your time if you enjoy an off the beaten path, once in a lifetime look at San Francisco!
